# Reporting overview

> How metrics, targets, dashboards and reports fit together, who can set them up, and the order to do it in.

Reporting in Spott is built from three parts. You define the **metrics** you want to
measure, set **targets** on those metrics, and combine everything into **dashboards** for
individual users, teams, or the whole company. **Reports** sit alongside them for deeper,
one-off analysis.

| Part | What it is | Where |
| - | - | - |
| [Metrics](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/metrics.md) | Saved definitions of what you measure, such as *Candidate calls*, *CVs sent* or *Booked fees* | **Settings → Performance → Metrics** |
| [Targets](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/targets.md) | What people, teams, or the company are working towards, per metric and per period | **Settings → Performance → Targets** |
| [Dashboards](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/dashboards.md) | Metrics, lists, pipelines and charts combined in one view, published to the people who need it | Built under **Settings → Performance → Dashboards**, read on the [Home dashboard](https://docs.spott.io/docs/get-started/dashboard.md) |
| [Reports](https://docs.spott.io/docs/outreach/reports.md) | Custom insights for analysis: funnels, time in stage, breakdowns | **Reports**, under **Tools** |

## Who can set it up

Once the new reporting is switched on for your workspace, **Metrics**, **Targets** and
**Dashboards** appear in **Settings** under **Performance**.

Only admins and users whose role has the **Manage Analytics Reports** permission can see and
use these three tabs. Everybody else simply reads the dashboards that are published to them
on the Home page. See [managing access](https://docs.spott.io/docs/settings/managing-access.md).

## Set it up in this order

**1. Define your metrics**

Start with what you want to count. Most teams create one metric per kind of activity,
for example one per note label, then add combined metrics such as **All candidate
calls** on top. See [metrics](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/metrics.md).

**2. Set targets on them**

Give users, teams, or the company a goal per metric and per period. Targets can change
over the year, for example lower in summer. See [targets](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/targets.md).

**3. Build and publish dashboards**

Put the metrics on a dashboard with their targets, next to the lists, pipelines and
charts people work from, and publish it to the right people. See
[building dashboards](https://docs.spott.io/docs/reporting/dashboards.md).

## Dashboards or Reports?

Both read live workspace data, and a **Chart** widget on a dashboard works the same way as
an insight in Reports. The difference is what each is for.

* **Dashboards** are for following the numbers every day. Each viewer sees their own
figures, or their team's, against their targets, without building anything.
* **Reports** are for answering a question once, or analysing over time: conversion
between stages with a **Funnel**, how long records sit in a stage with **Time in
Stage**, or a breakdown you want to export to Excel.

A common setup is a personal dashboard for each consultant, a team dashboard for each
manager, and a handful of Reports that management opens when they need the detail.
